Pardus Linux 2009
One of the nice things about Linux is that anybody can create a Linux distribution and sometimes the better distros come from the most unlikely of places. Pardus Linux 2009 is a Turkish distribution. Pardus Linux was created and maintained by The National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), an affiliate of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
The word “pardus” comes from the latin name for a leopard native to Turkey. And Pardus uses a package manager called “PiSi” which is a Turkish word for kitty. Hey, aside from Apple, how many people name their products after kitties? A unique and humorous naming scheme, to be sure.
What’s New In This Release
There’s quite a bit of new stuff in this release of Pardus Linux and here’s a sample of what you’ll find:
KDE 4.2.4
Linux kernel version 2.6.30.1
OpenOffice.org office applications suite 3.1
Mozillla Firefox web browser 3.5.1
Gimp 2.6.6
Xorg 1.6.2
Python 2.6.2
Texlive 2008
Ext4
GCC 4.3.3
GLIBC 2.9
This version of Pardus also includes updates to YALI (Yet Another Linux Installer) as well as the PiSi package manager. The PiSi package manager updates are geared toward making it faster and to use less bandwidth (since it now only downloads parts of package updates as opposed to downloading entire replacement packages). This version of PiSi also has the potential to use up to 20% less disk space. The YALI improvements are designed to speed up the install.

It takes forever to get to the...
Overall, I have found Pardus to be quite a solid distro and believe it to be one of the more underrated gems out there. As for your problems, they sound like they might be more related to KDE4 than anything else; don’t get me started on KDE4……(as I write to you from a sidux+kde3 box).
I suggest many of your readers go ahead and give it the once over. They won’t likely be disappointed.
and English is the Default Language in the International version of Pardus 2009.
Is the normal language is Turkish.
The standard language is English when i start up the International cd of Pardus 2009, so no problem here. Also with the International version Amarok is not included, You need to download it with the Package Manager. I don’t know if it is on the standard iso though.
From all the KDE 4.2.X distro’s out there Pardus 2009 is the best and most stable one of them. Mandriva, Kubuntu, openSUSE and many others could learn a lot from this release of Pardus. It’s a distro that made me finally enjoy KDE 4.2.4. After using it since the release of 18 July, this will be my main distro for a very long time.
About the KDE menu…. Why recommend the classic menu style? Just take your time to get used to it. What’s a better way to learn? I don’t like the classic KDE menu at all and i’m glad that KDE came up with a new menu.
One other thing, the Live-cd. Okay, it isn’t there but what is the advantage of downloading a Live-cd if you, as far as i know from previous versions, can’t install it. For me it’s a waste of the download limit we have over here.
Thanks for the heads up about English being the standard language for the international version, guys. That’s good to know.
MQ: I prefer the classic menus. The new ones just irritate the heck out of me. But to each his own. If you like the new ones, no problem. I’ll be the old fuddy duddy and you can be the cool new kid.
I installed the International version and I did have to change the install language from Turkish to English. Besides Jim’s problems and quibbles, I found two major snags after installation.
One is that even after changing all the language options I could find to “US English”, some items in the menus stubbornly remained in Turkish.
The other problem was/is more serious. While trying to make changes in “Advanced-System- ” section, my root password was not being recognized. The same root password worked for all other changes. I don’t know whether this due to the latest trend by distro developers to protect users from themselves by blocking certain system functions from them or whether it is an actual bug.
Yet Another Nice Review from you jim….keep the good work…
I installed Pardus 2009 when it came out. previously had 2008.2. I liked it a lot, but ultimately moved on because I really don’t like KDE to begin with (much less KDE 4), and I had problems getting the wireless to actually connect to my network. I think the wireless problem was an isolated event, and the KDE thing is just personal preference.
This is definitely a great and solid distro, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend or use it!
I think my the first post of my comment is disappeared.
There are 2 more desktop environments ?n Pardus 2009
*Xfce: You can install it from Package Manager (at contrib repo, Xfce Desktop)
*Gnome: From Pardus gnome project : http://code.google.com/p/pardus-gnome-project/
To install latest Gnome
First you should add two repos with these commands:
sudo pisi ar contrib-2009 http://packages.pardus.org.tr/contrib-2009/pisi-index.xml.bz2 -y
sudo pisi ar gnome http://pardus-gnome.prj.be/pisi-index.xml.bz2 -y
and then you need to update with:
sudo pisi up -y
to install gnome packages you should use:
sudo pisi it -c gnomeproject -y
installation completed. to be able to use it, you need to do some configuration:
first, open ‘/etc/conf.d/xdm’ in an text editor with admin privilages (i prefer to use mc as admin). you should change ‘#DISPLAY_MANAGER=”xdm”‘ to ‘DISPLAY_MANAGER=”gdm”‘, and save of course :)
and then, open ‘/etc/env.d/45kde4paths’ file like we did before(as admin) and change ‘XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’ line to ‘#XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’.
finally you are ready to go, just restart you system and gdm will start. with this, you can select which graphical environment to use.

The KDE4 Menu system is perfect. Only one other menu system is better and that is Mints.
