Pardus Linux 2009

One of the nice things about Linux is that anybody can create a Linux distribution and sometimes the better distros come from the most unlikely of places. Pardus Linux 2009 is a Turkish distribution. Pardus Linux was created and maintained by The National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), an affiliate of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.

The word “pardus” comes from the latin name for a leopard native to Turkey. And Pardus uses a package manager called “PiSi” which is a Turkish word for kitty. Hey, aside from Apple, how many people name their products after kitties? A unique and humorous naming scheme, to be sure.

What’s New In This Release
There’s quite a bit of new stuff in this release of Pardus Linux and here’s a sample of what you’ll find:

KDE 4.2.4
Linux kernel version 2.6.30.1
OpenOffice.org office applications suite 3.1
Mozillla Firefox web browser 3.5.1
Gimp 2.6.6
Xorg 1.6.2
Python 2.6.2
Texlive 2008
Ext4
GCC 4.3.3
GLIBC 2.9

This version of Pardus also includes updates to YALI (Yet Another Linux Installer) as well as the PiSi package manager. The PiSi package manager updates are geared toward making it faster and to use less bandwidth (since it now only downloads parts of package updates as opposed to downloading entire replacement packages). This version of PiSi also has the potential to use up to 20% less disk space. The YALI improvements are designed to speed up the install.

I grabbed Pardus 2009 a week or so ago and gave it a whirl. It was easy to install (but not as fast as sidux to install). It had a nice appearance, one of the nicer looking KDE 4 distros that has appeared so far, and it ran reasonably well. I understand that Turkish is the native language of the distribution, but I felt that a better job could have been done to ensure that when the Turkish locale was chosen, Turkish would be maintained throughout, but when English was selected, English would be maintained throughout.

I ran my tests in a Virtualbox OSE instance and I kept finding the language selection (if I wasn’t EXTREMELY careful) to revert to Turkish.

I think this is a good distribution, and it is probably somewhat easier to install than my current favorite, sidux, but it isn’t for me. I need a system that will diligently honor localization, and I am looking for distributions that can run either Live or installed. This one is a good one, but it’s not for me.

One nice thing I found: including video & audio in OpenOffice presentations works OUT OF THE BOX, every other distro I’ve tried has required tweaking to do that (and those that use “official” sources it’s well-nigh impossible).

I have to agree with you, Jim. When masinick and I went ’round on this question I finally concluded that I could get along nicely with KDE in its classic menu structure, but the “kick-start” menu (as I think they call it) was unacceptable. It added a lot of clicking and nothing functional beyond a conveniently located search function.

But the beauty of Linux is that we all get to choose and we can configure a desktop so that it works the way we prefer to have it.

I consider that to be one of the several reasons I have developed a very strong preference for Linux.

    @ arif:
Pardus is not a derivative or based on another distro.

and then, open ‘/etc/env.d/45kde4paths’ file like we did before(as admin) and change ‘XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’ line to ‘#XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’.

The line is the same as the other one what do we have to change?

Nice review. This is a very solid, up-to-date distro, well executed. KDE 4.2.4 implementation changed my thinking about KDE for the better, and is switchable back to the 3.5.x view if desired.

As a Pardus user for two years, I can definetely say that I am glad they are developing Pardus. From the first distro, there has been a lot of improvement and I hope this goes on.

I think every Linux users should try it: easy to use, solid enough, enjoyable. Also, people, who consider starting to use Linux, this distro should be your one of the first choices.

    Enjoy it =)
