I just loaded it after I tried Ubuntu. I love it!!. Encrypted DVD's work right off the bat and I could wtch HULU and Youtube right after the install without having to tweak it. The games in their distro are great! This versions loads on EXT4 and I have been very pleased with it thus far! It could use RAID capabilities in the upcoming version though. Ubuntu is very over rated in my opinion. This gem is worth trying out. :w00t:

I just installed Pardus-2009 International and everything went great until time to log in after first boot. The usb Dell 2 button wheel mouse stop working. It worked during installation, but once I rebooted and signed in, it doesn't work. I tried everything I could think of including no mouse, switching mouse but still mouse will not work.

Other than that, nice distro. I'll try to see if I can get it working and go from there on keeping it around.

for menu problem I have a solution. I have 2 menu buttons on the panel. one of them uses Kickoff style, the other uses classic menu style.
I've just added one more button to panel and switched its menu to classic menu style. (right click the panel > panel options > add program > find the menu button with pardus logo from the list and add!
I like favorites, recently used tabs and their easy switching by Kickoff menu. but I use classic menu to find a new program from the applications menu.

As a Pardus user for two years, I can definetely say that I am glad they are developing Pardus. From the first distro, there has been a lot of improvement and I hope this goes on.

I think every Linux users should try it: easy to use, solid enough, enjoyable. Also, people, who consider starting to use Linux, this distro should be your one of the first choices.

Enjoy it =)

Nice review. This is a very solid, up-to-date distro, well executed. KDE 4.2.4 implementation changed my thinking about KDE for the better, and is switchable back to the 3.5.x view if desired.

I have to agree with you, Jim. When masinick and I went 'round on this question I finally concluded that I could get along nicely with KDE in its classic menu structure, but the "kick-start" menu (as I think they call it) was unacceptable. It added a lot of clicking and nothing functional beyond a conveniently located search function.

But the beauty of Linux is that we all get to choose and we can configure a desktop so that it works the way we prefer to have it.

I consider that to be one of the several reasons I have developed a very strong preference for Linux.

One nice thing I found: including video & audio in OpenOffice presentations works OUT OF THE BOX, every other distro I've tried has required tweaking to do that (and those that use "official" sources it's well-nigh impossible).

I grabbed Pardus 2009 a week or so ago and gave it a whirl. It was easy to install (but not as fast as sidux to install). It had a nice appearance, one of the nicer looking KDE 4 distros that has appeared so far, and it ran reasonably well. I understand that Turkish is the native language of the distribution, but I felt that a better job could have been done to ensure that when the Turkish locale was chosen, Turkish would be maintained throughout, but when English was selected, English would be maintained throughout.

I ran my tests in a Virtualbox OSE instance and I kept finding the language selection (if I wasn't EXTREMELY careful) to revert to Turkish.

I think this is a good distribution, and it is probably somewhat easier to install than my current favorite, sidux, but it isn't for me. I need a system that will diligently honor localization, and I am looking for distributions that can run either Live or installed. This one is a good one, but it's not for me.

The KDE4 Menu system is perfect. Only one other menu system is better and that is Mints.

I think my the first post of my comment is disappeared.

There are 2 more desktop environments ?n Pardus 2009

*Xfce: You can install it from Package Manager (at contrib repo, Xfce Desktop)

*Gnome: From Pardus gnome project : http://code.google.com/p/pardus-gnome-project/

To install latest Gnome

First you should add two repos with these commands:
sudo pisi ar contrib-2009 http://packages.pardus.org.tr/contrib-2009/pisi-index.xml.bz2 -y

sudo pisi ar gnome http://pardus-gnome.prj.be/pisi-index.xml.bz2 -y
and then you need to update with:
sudo pisi up -y

to install gnome packages you should use:
sudo pisi it -c gnomeproject -y

installation completed. to be able to use it, you need to do some configuration:

first, open ‘/etc/conf.d/xdm’ in an text editor with admin privilages (i prefer to use mc as admin). you should change ‘#DISPLAY_MANAGER=”xdm”‘ to ‘DISPLAY_MANAGER=”gdm”‘, and save of course :)
and then, open ‘/etc/env.d/45kde4paths’ file like we did before(as admin) and change ‘XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’ line to ‘#XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/kde/4/share:/usr/share’.
finally you are ready to go, just restart you system and gdm will start. with this, you can select which graphical environment to use.

I installed Pardus 2009 when it came out. previously had 2008.2. I liked it a lot, but ultimately moved on because I really don't like KDE to begin with (much less KDE 4), and I had problems getting the wireless to actually connect to my network. I think the wireless problem was an isolated event, and the KDE thing is just personal preference.

This is definitely a great and solid distro, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend or use it!

Thanks for the heads up about English being the standard language for the international version, guys. That's good to know.

MQ: I prefer the classic menus. The new ones just irritate the heck out of me. But to each his own. If you like the new ones, no problem. I'll be the old fuddy duddy and you can be the cool new kid.
